About me
Hi, I’m Katherine! I’m a self-taught painter based in Ottawa, Canada, but my story starts in Montreal, where I grew up surrounded by art, nature, and a whole lot of curiosity. My childhood room was inspired by Van Gogh and M.C. Escher, and I was always drawing or painting, even while studying Wildlife Biology in university.
Life took me on quite a journey—living in Australia and Vancouver to pursue Marine Biology, then switching gears to study and work in interior design for a decade. Despite being discouraged from pursuing art as a career, I snuck in as many art classes as my science degree allowed.
Becoming a mom of two during the pandemic gave me the nudge I needed to finally focus on what truly mattered to me—painting. I missed creating with my hands (design work is mostly computer-based) and found my way into the daily painting community, which showed me that making a living as an artist wasn’t just a dream—it could be real.
My love of travel, storytelling, and nature runs deep, and they’re all woven into my work.
Why I Paint
I grew up immersed in nature—exploring ponds, forests, and the untamed wilderness around a summer cottage, catching frogs, foraging for mushrooms, and marveling at the world around me. Books fueled my imagination, helping me create imaginary worlds and inspiring me to draw and paint what I discovered.
My artistic journey began with still life, observing the beauty in everyday objects—how light transforms them, how colors interact and come alive. Over time, my focus has shifted to animals, whose presence inspires awe and a deep, unexplainable connection. Through my work, I aim to capture their beauty and the quiet lessons they have to teach us.
